Food and bribes

Speaking of healthy eating.......I know you're not supposed to use bribes of food as a reward. But sometimes I just can't find other options that work. Today I bribed Justin to eat some blackberries, with a reward of chocolate milk. Is that horrible? I'm hoping he'll remember he liked the blackberries and then eat them on his own another time. We'll see.

i dunno....i tell jonathan he needs to eat the rest of his (whatever veggie) and he can have a lollipop, marshmallow (current fav) or honeydew (all time fav). i think its just being real. in the real world adults don't like certain things (like me with most lettuce) but we understand our body needs us to eat it. i always tell jonathan why that certain food is good for him. i can remember eating a carrot stick when i was young and looking out the window and swearing that i could already see better!! duh!

drinking water is usually a big fight. i have to threaten to punish him if he doesn't finish his glass. then i make a big deal and put my ear on his belly and tell him how happy he made his body. that makes him feel good so hopefully he forgets that he was almost in trouble because then drinking water would be felt as a negative thing.

parenting is very difficult sometimes. and what stinks is other parents/professionals are always saying what is wrong to do. we have enough stress as it is!!

Jamie, yes I do agree with you on the professionals. To me parenting is trial and error. What works for some parents may not work for another parent. Each child is different in her/his own way and you (meaning the parent of that child) know your own child and how she/he will respond. I took a course at Wilson Elementary School when my boys were young and it was called Parent Effective Training (P.E.T.). It taught us how the tough love really works and I thought it really helped me with my bullheaded son, Tommy. Chuck didn't like how I handled him with this tough love, but in the end he was thankful for this knowledge that I learned. Teachers also took the same course, except it was called Teacher Effective Training (T.E.T.).

You can get the book in the library on this. I thought it was an interesting course, but some parents thought it was too harsh. But to me that was their opinion. You can either take or leave it.
