How Mince Meat Became Meatless

I was wondering about what exactly is in mince meat pie. I was thinking about it because my paternal grandmother used to make it at holidays. I remember not liking it, but it was always there, so it became one of my holiday associations. I might like it as an adult, who knows? Anyway, I ran across this article and thought it was interesting.

Mince Meat Pie must be a favorite of our grandparents days, because my Nana & Papa liked it too, but I sure didn't. I can't remember if my mom like it or not.

Holiday traditions around my grandparent's house was eating the filling patties. When my Nana cleaned the bird out she cooked all the gizzads, heart, liver and anything else the was inside of it. My mom, nana & papa ate them all, each one had a favorite of those parts, YUK not me. I really wish I was taught how to make filling like my nana made them, because I haven't found anyone yet that can make it like her, not even me. She had that magic touch with filling, and boy were they soooo good made into patties and fried in Crisco Shortning. That is what we were raised on at holiday dinners.

This was a typical holiday meal for Thanksgiving & Christmas meal......turkey, filling patties, mashed potatoes, broccoli, corn, lettuce with bacon dressing, cranberry sauce, and turkey gravy with no lumps, LOL. And for desserts we had pumpkin pie, mince meat pie, apple pie, rice pudding, and some kind of cake. Sometimes there was a fruit cake there, but I didn't like that either, YUK.

Boy do I really miss them days.....I really miss my grandparents a lot.

After dinner, we would play either pool (my Papa had a pool table on the other side of the basement), or play Uno, or other games. My Papa loved Uno, it would make him laugh so loud when he made my boys keep picking and picking those cards.

Those were GREAT days! It was never the same after 1995, when my Nana passed away on Good Friday.
