School

Leanna learned about telling time in school already. Just the basics, but still....I didn't learn about telling time until second grade. And that was in a private school. They seem to go over an awful lot of stuff, and they do it so quickly. I wonder how much of it the kids retain? I'm guessing that it has something to do with all the testing they do. They are always testing them on the stuff they've learned. I don't remember that being a part of kindergarten at all. (My memories of kindergarten involve songs, and games, naptime, memorizing Bible verses-again, private school-and doing a little reading, the Dick and Jane and Spot variety).

Yes, I guess it gets progressively harder for kindergarteners as the years pass. My memories of kindergarten are playing, especially with clay lol. But we could play with all kinds of toys. We also took a nap on the floor, ate graham crackers probably milk too but there was no learning. Instead, the emphasis was on children adjusting to be in a school situation. I think it was a good thing. They are trying to rush children way too much anymore. I read this blog entry and it makes me want to go to the teacher and ask him how teaching them this way is effective.

The lawas have changed on education that is why the kids are doing so much in kindergarten. You have PSSA testing the is a must in your senior year. If you don't get a proficient scoring you don't graduate.

It isn't like we were in school or our kids. Kids have to be more intellegent because of all the technologies that are out there, like computers, ie.

As Leanna goes on to a higher grade she will be taught things more advanced than what we all learned. The kids of today, their minds are smarter because of all the advanced technologies that are out there.

You will have to go back to school just to help her with her homework. They also use the computer more in school in higher grades to get homework done too.

This is how are world is changing......very fast pace.....

Well, I wouldn't say their minds are smarter, their skills may be different--we didn't have computers when we were children so we couldn't learn to use them. However, you look at the education being given to children today and it's not the education I received as a child--though my first 8 years were at a catholic school and they do give an excellent education. My kids did not receive the same education I did.

Did you ever get the email that was going around about what children had to know around the turn of the century? What 10 year olds had to know is a lot of high school & college material. It's the "dumbing down of America", in spite of the new laws, we are not as educated as previous generations.
