Learning

First full day with allergic boy=twice he ate a bar that he wasn't supposed to eat. It's very difficult because he's old enough to be aware of his regular food and his preferences, but not old enough to understand that he can't have something. Luckily, it's not a huge deal, he had a couple bites of a food he's had many times before. I'm lucky that he's not extremely allergic and that the consequences aren't more serious. I did have to talk to his siblings about not giving Jacob any food without checking with me first, and to not to let him have certain things that I already know he can't have. As I go to get things I'm checking ingredients.......but it'll take a while before I know basically which things he can and can't have without having to look first. Soy's in everything! I am lucky that he's not allergic to milk and wheat!!

Jamie has a Sign posted on the Frig and on the cabinet food pantry door of all the foods ingredients that Jonathan can't have. She has it color coded so it pops out at you. She also has a Jonathan shelf in the frig (with his name on the shelf), so when, he is hungry he knows or anyone else knows it is safe to give to him. His food is seperated from anyone elses in the house.

Maybe, this is a policy you may want to do, because Leanna knows how to read and she can help you.

When I was watching him and Josslyn she would put a basket on the table with all the foods & snacks Jonathan could eat during the day. So, it made it safer for me to know it was OK to give him.

I hope this was a help.

thats a good way to do it, and steph, maybe if you did a shelf for each kid with their fav foods, then it would work for jacob b/c "eveyone" would be doing it. (since he's too young to really get it) kids can read their names at a very young age so at least he'd recognize his name on the shelf. and it could be eye level to him so that would be a clue! =)

Since, Jacob has a sweet tooth radar, then I would do what John and Jamie do, not allow anything that is harmful to Jacob in the house whatsoever. When John gets a sweet craving or junk craving, he either eats it out of the house or eats it in his truck/car and then makes sure his hands and mouth is clean before he goes near Jonathan.

I really think this will help you out tremendously, if it isn't in the house for him to crave or sniff it out.

Sugar, I believe is a very hard craving to get rid of, because there is sugar in almost anything to make it taste better.

I learned a long time ago in "Weight Watchers" about dealing with sugar cravings. We were taught to eat something sour or salty, like a pickle, lemon, or just plain salt (lick it from your hand). The craving should go away fairly quickly.

Yes, it is easier said than done, but when, it comes to your child's overall health, this is the route to go. Start going through all you cabinets and start organizing what he can and can't eat. Either give it to a shelter or find someone else that wants it.
