Question for moms/parents reading this

What rules did/have/do you plan to enforce regarding tv? I'm curious.....

IMO...it is ok to have the tv on as long as jonathan is doing something active while watching it...and only one wiggles/jay jay movie a day! LOL

but seriously, jonathan likes the "noise" of the tv and is active playing while just glancing at it every so often, so i don't mind allowing it to be on.

i also don't allow "mindless" cartoons...only playhouse disney and PBS so at least he is learning stuff while it's on.

Watching tv, that is the question, HUH!

When my kids were young they were only allowed to watch certain TV shows for kids. Back then, they didn't have the DISNEY CHANNEL, CARTOON CHANNEL, or ANY OTHER KIDS CHANNEL. There was Captain Kangaroo, Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers and cartoons, that were for kids only. My kids watched a lot of Sesame Street and some cartoons. As they grew older, they played more with their toys and listened to the TV. When they started school, they were only allowed to watch certain shows; Dukes of Hazzard, Rescue 911 shows, Night Rider, on days they didn't go to school, because most shows came on at 8 PM and and that was their bedtime for school. If they had no school, then they were allowed to stay up until 9 PM, so that gave them an hour to watch a TV show they wanted. Of course, we only had 1 TV, not like households today, where there is a TV in every room. We usaually all liked the same shows, so that made it easier on us, as parents. At Chrsitmastime we, as parents, made sure they watched all the Christmas Cartoon Specials, they really enjoyed them. My boys liked The Wizard of Oz, which came on every year around the same time, that was nice because I grew up watching that too. Funny how things work, there are a lot of shows that were on, when I was a child, that were still coming on TV when my kids were kids.

When my boys became teens, they were NOT allowed to watch MTV. I didn't like the videos that were out with the music, and plus I didn't like that kind of TV being put in their young minds. I wanted them to learn, not be poisoned by crap, as us parents call junk TV.

So, to answer your question on TV, I feel it is up to the parent to select good programs for a child's mind of developement, if they want healthy growing kids. Too much TV is not good for a child's mind of developement. There is a lot of JUNK on TV today, that kids should not watch.oung kids shouldn't watch ADULT TV; like, Law and Order, Police Videos, shows with violence in them, they can frighten a child or warp a child's mind. So, I would pick a show that is good for a child as well as a parent, while the child is in the same room. After the child goes off to bed, then it is grown up TV for adults. Shows with gore, violence, or any other show that is not recommended for young people.

Tommy, was my youngest child and very active, so he was a hard child to get to sleep for me. My pediatrician told me I should let him watch a TV program that was relaxing at bedtime, so he could fall asleep better, or have him read a book. Tommy, hated books back then. I don't know if he likes books now. So, we mostly watched TV and it still took him forever to fall asleep.

Billy, my oldest son was a child that enjoyed TV. Every time a show would come on that had music in it, Billy would stop whatever he was doing and start dancing to the tune, he was so funny. That is when you wished you had a video camera, LOL! He would just start swaying from side to side and smiling from ear to ear. He was very easily, amused. Billy never had any trouble going to sleep.

So, I hope I was of some help in my child's developement to an adult.
