Smurfs
I saw a Toys R Us add for the smurfs and it said something about their 50th anniversary, which confused me as I was pretty sure they came out in the 80s. Tom made me look it up, and it turns out that they originated as a Belgin comic strip in 1958-who knew? In case anyone's curious-here's the history.

I knew that! I saw that on Trivial Pursuit game show last week., about them originated in Belgium and brought to the U.S.
I had learned quite a bit from a game show, even though I don't like the game, itself.
