Rise in Kidney Stones in children
To summ up the article(click on the subject line), doctors used to see a kid with this every few months, now they see at least one a week. It's mainly caused by not enough liquid combined with too much salt.

I don't believe that about not enough drinking and eating too much salt. The reason why, is JR the leader in the band gets kidney stones quite frequently and he drinks gatorade, water and healthy water. He eats no salt and the doctor told him he had to eat salt because he has NO sodium in his blood or urine tests. The doctor said you need a certain amount of sodium in your body to function properly. Also, the doctor told him they have no idea why some people produce kidney stones where there are others who don't. But he did say once you get one kidney stone you will get many many more in your lifetime.
I think that's the main-not only-reason for kids, not necesarily adults.
ya i think you may be right steph (maybe nurse michele can comment here)...adults can also get it from not enough water...a girl i work with has to drink a gallon a day to make sure she doesnt get any more... but depending on what forms the stone...such as calcium or uric acid, those would be the foods an adult would have to avoid...with kids, its a whole different ball game i'm sure! sue, JR might have another thing going on in his body regarding the salt...not necessarily relating to the stones, but i could be wrong. (i only say this b/c we have a lot of patients in our office with low sodium and no stones)
