Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed an executive order that will require all schoolgirls to be vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer. Girls will have to get Merck's new vaccine Gardasil, which protects against strains of HPV that are responsible for most cases of cervical cancer. Texas becomes the first state to require the shots.Merck is paying for efforts to pass laws in several states that would require the vaccine for girls as young as eleven or 12.
I'm not against the vaccine itself, although I'd like it to be around for a while before forcing it upon my own child. I don't think it encourages promiscuity. As a person who has dealt with cervical cancer (caught early enough) I do understand that this is lifesaving. (although it only deals with the biggest causer of cervical cancer, not all of them). I take issue with the gov.'t forcing it on us-saying you must have this shot for school. And I especially take issue with the fact that the reason this vaccine is being so heavily promoted is to raise profits for Merck. Apparently the reason behind the Texas governor's signing an order to make it mandatory that schoolgirls get the vaccine is his financial connections to Merck, which manufactures Gardasil. That is unconscionable. And all too common!
